Many Congratulations Peter on joining one of the nicest and most important degrees in Masonry. My original Mark Lodge was in East Lancs. I have just completed two years in the Chair of my current Mark Lodge in Northumberland. I Installed my successor last Thursday. I am also 3rd Principal in a Scottish Chapter, where the Mark is the 1st of the 3 degrees inculcated in the Chapter here. Enjoy the beauty and friendliness of this lovely degree. And Mark Well.

Thanks Martin, I've been trying to join the Mark in the last year but the members of my lodge discouraged it and they addressed me to a HRA chapter...

Oh my, please do follow your heart on this - you are so right to do so.

S&F,

Cora

It is indeed sad that one of the most meaningful degrees in Freemasonry is so often overlooked in the rush to get a Bro. into "more important" Degrees such as Chapter, KT's, Red Cross etc. Mark Masonry inculcates most if not all of the import and ethos of the other Degrees. There are no Degrees more "important" than another (except to those misguided souls who think that being a member of "such and such" a Degree will enhance their honours). Every Degree is 'separate and distinct' and is special in its own individuality.

Do not be put off being Advanced into Mark Masonry. It is a lovely and "important" Degree in its own right.

Thanks...I will be looking forward to receiving the Mark and belonging to the Mark Lodge this coming November, if all is in Order.

I've been toying with the idea of joining the Mark degree for a couple of years but have largely been put off by people saying it's informal and not taken as seriously as Craft (comments which clearly were meant to achieve the opposite), but the Mark threads on here and a conversation with a Mark Lodge DC has started to turn me. I think the description of it being fun was both mis-representative and mis-understood.

I realy enjoy the second degree ceremony and all the work of the second degree: Tracing Board, Lectures and Working Tools and that Mark is an extension of the second degree is a real attraction for me.

The Mark degree is incorrectly termed the 'fun' degree in my opinion - yes Mark lodges and the ceremony are hugely enjoyable - it doesn't mean that it is frivolous, and I've found that those who describe it in pejorative terms frequently aren't members - something that afflicts UGLE masonry more so than other jurisdictions. I believe that this is because the Mark degree isn't administered by UGLE whereas Royal Arch is - there is always heavy pressure on the newly made Master Mason to join RA, however, if you speak to GLoS members or UGLE members who are in Mark then the advice tends to be to join Mark before taking up chapter

The Mark degree is sometimes termed as the 'continuation of the 2nd degree'. Royal Arch (chapter) is touted as being the completion of the third degree - bearing this in mind it makes sense to do Mark before chapter - in my opinion

I'm not in chapter but am in Mark, albeit lapsed due to family and other commitments at the moment.

I would always advise caution to the new MM - don't join up to loads of side orders as soon as you are raised. It may seem as tho you have plenty of time on your hands, but you may only have 5 - 7 years before you are installed as WM (lodge membership and personal desires dependent) and you will have no time on your hands!
