November 29, 2009 - Grand Orient: No Mixed Masonry This Year

The Council of the Order of the Grand Orient de France (GODF) decided to defer to the next annual convent (general assembly) the new vote on the mixing of the lodges [by sex], according to the Grand Master, Pierre Lambicchi. The vote of the preceding convent of the Masonic obedience, which had refused the mixing of the lodges last September 4, was annulled by the Chamber of Justice of the Grand Orient de France because of a question of form. The heading of the question had been modified without the agreement of the "Committee of Proposals and Regulations."

The convent, which brought together the delegates of the 1,200 lodges of the GODF, voted 56% against the mixing of the lodges. The question was whether to allow lodges the freedom to initiate women or to affiliate "sisters" of other obediences. Two lodges appealed to the Supreme Chamber of Masonic Justice and the vote of the convent was annulled. The Council of the Order on Sunday met to decide whether it was necessary to convene an extraordinary convent or to wait for the "normal" convent next September to revote on the mixing of the lodges.

The question of the mixing of the lodges has been posed for several years. Two years ago, the majority of the representatives of the lodges decided not to bring the issue to a vote; a year ago, they decided to let the lodges reflect on the issue for a year and to vote in 2009. And at the last convent, the vote was 56% against mixing.

The preceding Grand Master, Jean-Michel Quillardet, was openly favorable to mixing. The present Grand Master, Pierre Lambicchi, thinks that the majority of lodges are opposed to mixing, and advocates rather for a federation of obediences joining together the masculine, feminine and mixed branches.

GOdF, in one of who's Lodges I have sat, is interesting in that whilst (at present) it does not Initate female Candidates it will accept them as visitors to its Lodges.  Myself, Bro Cora and another female Brother in LDH were received as guests by Loge Hiram a couple of years ago now.

I am still slightly puzzled as to the exact effect of the Legal Ruling posted , but I am  not a Lawyer.  I await the outcome of this matter with great interest.

It is very puzzling isn't it Brother. They accept Atheists though but not women, very interesting. I call it Obscure Landmarks.

Accept me as a visitor is fine by me.

Different ballpark Bro:. TJ.

In France there is such a thing as laicite - a term difficult to translate, but akin to secularism underpinned by constitutional separation of state and church.  In France, one has absolute freedom of conscience, i.e. you can believe (or not) whatever you want (or don't); just practise it in private.

It would be completely inappropriate to make disclosure of one's beliefs obligatory.

Of course, one's gender is rather, erm, obvious.  In most cases.

I was always told that in Bangkok and Phuket if the person looks really pretty, has a nice face and figure and comes on strong to you then they are more likely to be a "ladyboy" than a biological female.
