Journey Through Darkness
Journey Through Darkness

This is an autobiographical account of how a family man and world class athlete, Howard Brown, came to find himself serving ten years imprisonment, but it is a tale with a difference.

Inspired by figures like Nelson Mandela and ‘The Birdman of Alcatraz’, Brown dedicated himself to researching and cross-referencing the origins of organised religion throughout the course of his sentence. His research was a journey that took him from studying the Egyptian and early Mesopotamian texts right through the Hindu manuscripts to the Old and New Testaments and Koran with admirably impressive attention to detail.  This research and its conclusions are woven into the fabric of his jail sentence and this opus is not only well written, informative, and well substantiated, but thought provoking and thoroughly entertaining. Brown’s self-deprecation, optimism, and wit shine through in tandem with his pain, realism, and intelligence. It is no exaggeration to state that Journey Through Darkness is a grabber from the start.

Although not a Mason himself, Brown had, and still has friends within the craft and his comments on Freemasonry are not only pleasantly objective but challenging and intriguing.

Most refreshingly many of the points that ‘Journey’ raises are original and take another step further the material that historical enthusiasts may already be familiar with. Unsurprisingly his in-depth religious research is controversial and will no doubt be the cause of much debate.

It’s an easy to read and fresh perspective on political, religious and ethical matters as well as the ups and downs of life itself. Brown’s anecdotes and arguments on racial and sexual equality are inspiring and in its serious moments the book makes it clear which issues are dear to its heart.

Looking for information, fresh argument, or entertainment? Journey Through Darkness does not disappoint and lives up to one of the most attention grabbing covers that I have seen in many years.
